WiVRn server config: unknown keys are silently ignored
open unclassified Project: hydra Parent: #388 Reporter: 14 Sep 2026 23:06

Description

Documentation/ergonomics note, no code change proposed yet.

The WiVRn server config key for encoders is "encoder" (SINGULAR), whose value is a string, an object, or a 3-element array for left, right and alpha. Writing "encoders" (plural) is silently ignored: the server starts, logs nothing unusual, and streams with default encoder selection.

This cost real debugging time on 2026-09-14: a session that was believed to be testing pyrowave was actually streaming vulkan h265 at 24.6 Mbit/s, and the mistake was only caught by reading the print_encoders block in the server log.

Also worth recording:

  • There is NO server-side bitrate key. Bitrate is a CLIENT setting, set in the headset app. Confirmed against the full key list in docs/configuration.md.
  • pyrowave is not supported for the alpha stream; use [{pyrowave},{pyrowave},{}].

Suggestion: warn on unrecognised top-level config keys.
